Issues I Stand On

Voter Rights!

I will fight to restore, protect, and preserve voting rights as outlined in Section 2 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.  It is through the democratic process of casting the ballot that people have a legitimate voice in government and whereby people are allowed to elect their candidate of choice to represent their vested interests.

  Criminal Legal Reform:

The U.S. criminal legal system is a mockery to the world. Our nation possesses the highest incarceration rates in the world.  The state of Louisiana has the highest incarceration rates among all 50 Continental states.  I will work to create legislation that provides alternative solutions to incarceration, rehabilitates and restores persons with criminal convictions, provides holistic victim assistance, and reallocates and reinvests resources to communities to address the root causes of criminality.

Federal Minimum Wage & Living Wage:

The current federal minimum hourly wage ($7.25) is not complimentary to the present living costs. Unless the federal minimum wage is raised significantly to provide people with an adequate income to secure their basic needs (food, housing, education), poverty levels will continue to rise.  I support a significant increase in the federal minimum wage and that wages, across the board, should be a living wage that provides for the sustainability and viability of individuals and their households.

Job Growth & Development:

I support job expansion and job growth. I will advocate for regional investments in infrastructure, construction jobs,  agriculture and farming, manufacturing, technology (including AI), small business development, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Education:

I support public education and, therefore, I will advocate for the full funding of our public schools and public higher education institutions.  Currently, the lack of real investments in our children's education is an affront to every parent who has a scholar enrolled in the public school system.  We need students to have the educational   resources and tools to free their minds to soar to intellectual heights and academic excellence  We spend more money on incarcerating a person in our penal system than we do on educating a child in the classroom.  Sociologists and criminologists have correctly observed that our public school system serves as a "school-to-prison pipeline."  Investing and growing exceptional and committed teachers can break the school to prison pipeline.  But to recruit, grow, and retain committed teachers, we must pay them their worth. I will be a strong advocate for teachers pay. Likewise I will vigorously advocate for Higher Education funding. A college/university Education should be accessible and affordable to all.  Investing in the education of our people is the biggest investment our state and nation can make.

Elimination of the Electoral College:

The Electoral College, simply put, is outdated. It flies in the face of the democratic process and stands as an ever-present negating instrumentality against the will of the voting public. The evidence of such can be seen in the Bush-Gore presidential election results in, 2000, and, most recently, in the, 2016, Clinton-Trump presidential election where, in both cases, the winner with the most popular votes was not seated as the duly elected President.

Term Limits U.S. Supreme Court

The current climate and imbalance in the Court's rulings has contributed to undermining the balance of power between the three branches of government and thereby brought our nation to the brink of a "constitutional crisis." As a corrective, term limits should be imposed upon members of the Court  to insure and insulate the people from being subjected to extreme rulings that undermine individual freedoms and undercut democracy.

Women's Reproductive Choice:

I am pro-choice. No woman or girl should be forced or compelled to carry to birth an unwanted pregnancy. The woman's body is sacred and should not be subjected to the whims and dictates of misogynist-minded males nor to the public affirmation of women who embrace birthing--at all costs. Just as women may exercise the choice to give birth,  women and (females of accountable age) should be free to decide about their bodies in the matter of birth or terminating a pregnancy.

Ending Predatory Lending and Predatory Collection Agencies:

Predatory lending agencies are a pariah to the poor. With the exorbitant interest rates charged to customers for short term loans (pay day) people are caught up in a vicious cycle where they will inevitably fall further into poverty. Likewise, high credit card debts and high interests consumer loans that fall into default subject customers to debt collector agencies and unscrupulous lawyers. I will work on legislation to end the greed of the legal crooks and agencies they prey on financially struggling customers.

Climate Change & Environment

I support a clean air Act, prevention and removal of pollutants in our rivers, lakes, and oceans.  This means supporting renewable energy, green jobs, carbon monoxide free automobiles, and ending corporate toxic waste into our urban centers and rural communities.

Social Safety Net

I will support legislation to protect, preserve, and expand Medicaid,  Medicare, and Social Security.  Health is perhaps the most important issue that everyone should agree on.  After all, a healthy America can only exist when people have access to affordable health care.  Medicaid ensures that the most vulnerable segment of the population has access to healthcare.  Medicare provides for the health care and well-being of people who have reached retirement. Medicare is not an entitlement program; it is a benefit that people pay for during their employment. Likewise, Social Security is not an entitlement.  It is money that people pay into as a means of providing income or supplemental income upon full retirement. Severe cuts and/or elimination of either of these safety nets will undermine the overall health and well-being of millions of Americans.  Read More
